What Kind of Computer Should I Buy?

Hey Jane; I need a new computer.  What kind should I buy?  I get this question often.  Here is the my best advice for finding the computer that works for you.

All I do is check email and surf the web.
Perhaps you keep up with friends and family on Facebook, have email, look for information on the web, and even do some online shopping.  If this sounds like you then you probably need a Google Chromebook.  Here is what you need to know:  Chromebooks....
  • Are inexpensive and easy to use.  They usually cost less than $300.00 with many excellent models selling for less that $200.00.
  • Have larger screens on the newer models so they are easy to see.
  • Run Google Chrome as their Internet browser.
  • Use Gmail as the default email; however, you can use any email provider as they allow you to check your mail through the Internet.
  • Do not get viruses.
  • Update automatically.
  • Are lightweight and easy to take with you when you travel.
  • Are wireless devices so you can get online for free at Starbucks, Panera Bread, McDonald's and most hotels (some hotels charge a fee for Internet access).
  • Have a trackpad but can also use an external mouse.
  • Have built in speakers so you can watch movies and videos from YouTube and other outlets.
  • Have a webcam (in most models) so you can Skype or use Google Hangouts to talk with friends and family.
I travel lots, like to read, take pictures or videos, and stay connected with family and friends.
If this sounds like you, an iPad is your best option.  Yes, there are lots of different tablets out there; but if you want the one with the most versatility and the best technical support then the iPad is still the way to go.  Here is what you need to know.  iPads....
  • Have excellent video screens for watching movies and reading online.  Between iBooks and the free Kindle App for the iPad, you can read practically anything online.
  • Are wireless devices you can connect anywhere to the Internet there is Wi-Fi.
  • Do not get viruses and updates are automatic.
  • Are thin and light so go almost anywhere.
  • Have two cameras, one that allows you to make video calls using FaceTime and another that allows you to capture photos and videos and then save them to share with others.
  • Come in different sizes - iPad Mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro.

I like to create spreadsheets, create Word documents, or make presentations.
